Frequently Asked Questions

About Generators

Why are there two rating numbers for a generator?

The ratings numbers represent a maximum and continuous output rating for the given generator. The maximum indicates how much power the generator can produce for a short time only while the continuous rating is for sustained output.

What is an inverter generator?

To produce AC power at 50Hz, most generators must operate at a constant engine speed.  Inverter generators produce DC power and the 'inverter' feature converts it to AC.  By doing so, the engine speed is not fixed. It can be varied according to power requirements. There are three main advantages to an inverter generator.  The power is clean < 2.5% distortion compared to < 5% for mains power.  They can be quieter than normal AC generators and they typically use less fuel.
